Perfect Throwball Court Size; Markings & Measurements

For many people, throwball court size is a common concern, which can lead to unfair play. But the solution lies in understanding the official throwball court dimensions and the proper markings for a well-regulated playing area.

Throwball is a fun, non-contact sport mostly popular in Asia, especially India. It all started as a women’s sport in the 1940s in Chennai, India.

So, what is a throwball? Well, you can play the game either indoors or outdoors. Throwball involves two teams, each with 7 players. They stand on opposite sides of a rectangular court with a net in the middle. Its court looks like a volleyball court layout at first glance, but there are some differences between them.

While both games use a net and involve two teams, the throwball court is much bigger than a standard volleyball court. The International Throwball Federation (ITF) is responsible for standard rules and regulations of the throwball sport.

In this post, we’ll explore the ideal throwball court size; you’ll get the right measurements for a perfect throwball court setup.

Throwball court markings

Throwball court markings define the boundaries, zones, and lines players must know before playing.

Boundary Lines

Boundary lines are the outermost lines that mark the edges of the court. The length of the court is 18.3 meters, and the width is 12.2 meters. These lines make the shape of the court.

Center Line

A line that runs across the court, dividing it into two halves. The centerline separates the two teams’ playing areas.

Attack Line

The Attack Line, also known as the ‘Front Line,’ is marked parallel to the center line and usually measures 3 meters from it. Players are not allowed to cross this line while serving. It is considered a reference point for determining the front and back rows.

Service Line

This line is parallel to the center line and situated 2 meters from it. Players serve from behind this line.

Neutral Boxes

On each side of the centerline, there are 1-meter square boxes, known as neutral boxes.

Front and Back Rows

The front row is typically marked by a line parallel to the centerline, which measures 3 meters from the attack line. The back row extends from the attack line to the end boundary line.

Throwball Net Dimensions

In throwball, the net is a crucial element for fair play. Let’s measure the standard size of the net.

The throwball net is placed across the center of the court, at 2.2 meters (7.22 feet) above the ground. This height size fulfills the criteria of national throwball regulations.

The net’s width measures 12.2 meters and spans the throwball court’s entire width. In a net, the mesh size refers to the size of the gaps in the netting material. It is not usually specified in official throwball regulations. But like a volleyball net, the net is meant to be taut and prevent the ball from passing through with ease.

Net Specifications

  • Net Material—Cotton or nylon.
  • Length—12.2 meters.
  • Width—1 meter.
  • Mesh Size—10 cm x 10 cm.
  • Ribbon—5 cm thick at the top and bottom.

Antenna

Antenna determines whether the ball is in or out of bounds. These antennas are placed on both sides of the net, on the sidelines. They serve as visual markers and indicators; antennas help referees and players make accurate calls during the game.

Two 5 cm wide tapes are fastened on either side of the net to hold these antennas securely. Each antenna should be 1.80 meters long and 10 mm in diameter. Antennas are typically constructed using materials such as cane or fiber.

The antennas are set at a height of 80 cm above the net. This positioning provides a clear visual reference point and helps players and referees determine whether the ball has crossed the net within the bounds of the court.
