What is netball?

So, what is the netball game? Well, netball, a ball sport, consists of team; each team consists of seven players.

The game is on a rectangular court with raised goal rings at each end. The game’s objective is to score by throwing a ball into the opposing team’s ring, which is 10 feet high. On a court, players have specific positions, and they are allowed to hold the ball 3 seconds before passing. In total, the game lasts for 60 minutes, divided into 15-minute quarters.

Netball is a women’s sport played by women and girls, popular in Commonwealth countries. Netball is enjoyed by over 20 million people in 80+ countries. There are international competitions like the World Netball Championships and the Commonwealth Games, and domestic leagues like the Netball Superleague in Great Britain and Suncorp Super Netball in Australia. Netball is officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee but is not part of the Olympics.

Netball shares many similarities with basketball in terms of rules and equipment, although team numbers are different. Generally, the ball and basket are a bit smaller in netball.

A standard netball court measures 30.5 meters in length and 15.25 meters in width. The court is divided into three halves, each third measuring 10.176 meters wide and 15.25 meters long. The center third is where you find the center circle. The other two end thirds are where the goals are set up—the netball court lines measure along the length of the netball court, known as sidelines. The shorter sides are known as goal lines, where the netball ring is placed.

The netball ring is 3.05 meters above the ground. For comparison, a basketball court is 15 meters by 28 meters, and the standard height for a basketball hoop is just 10mm shorter than a netball ring.

This means you can have a playing area for both sports on one court, which is a great option for homes and outdoor places like high schools and local parks.

Gradient

The outdoor courts have a slight slope of 1% in both directions or 1% diagonally on a consistent surface. Indoor courts, on the other hand, are flat without any slopes.

Run-off Space

Along the sidelines and baselines, you can find 3.05 meters of clear space. These run-off zones should be obstacle-free and have the same surface type and level as the court.

Smaller size netball court

If you’re short on space, you might want to consider a mini-court netball setup. The smaller netball courts typically have a shorter length than official courts, measuring 20 meters (66 feet) to 25 meters (82 feet). The width of a smaller netball court scaled down to be between 10 meters (33 feet) and 12.5 meters (41 feet).

I am gonna tell you a cool thing: you can fit in markings for both basketball and netball on a medium-sized court. The semi-circle around a netball goal should have a radius of 4.9 meters from the goal line, and a basketball free-throw line is about 5.8 meters from the baseline. So, with clever planning, you can enjoy both sports on the same court without needing a vast area.
